The ups and downs of tourism in Italy

Recent data on tourist movements in Italy show a marked recovery compared to the previous year in the flows of non-resident customers in Italy (+ 40.3%) and, to a lesser extent, resident ones (+ 14.2%).

In the first nine months of 2021, the presence of tourists in accommodation establishments grew by + 22.3% (+42.4 million) compared to 2020. However, the figures are still far from the levels of 2019 (-38.4%) . Istat underlines that in particular from July to September, thanks to the easing of restrictions linked to a lower pandemic spread, the tourist presences were approximately 177 million: + 31% compared to 2020, but in any case 29 million less in comparison with the period pre-pandemic.

Trips carried out for work reasons maintain the levels of 2020 (1.5 million). And if business meetings continue to decrease (-46.5%), representation, sales, installation or similar activities resume instead (+ 67%), which in the period considered represent the most frequent reasons for business trips.

Among the components of tourism demand, the foreign one shows greater recovery difficulties (-56.1% of admissions) than the domestic component (-20.3%). On the other hand, as regards the types of accommodation facilities, the hotel sector suffers the most, with a drop in attendance of 44.3%, compared to the non-hotel sector (- 28.3%).

Also to cope with this situation, it is important that hoteliers rely on specialists to help them conduct a thorough risk analysis and choose effective measures to protect themselves. The sector is in fact exposed to risks that have certainly increased with the pandemic, but which were already present before. Some, those related to the ordinary activities of the structures, can be easily reduced with targeted investments and above all with adequate staff training, creating a real culture of risk management. By combining these actions with appropriate prevention activities, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate some risks, and consequently also a decrease in insurance costs.
