Florence pays homage to Henry Moore

The capital of Tuscany dedicates a series of events, insured by Strategica, to the great contemporary sculptor.

After the successful exhibition at Forte di Belvedere in 1972, Florence again wants to pay homage to the sculptor Henry Moore with the dedicated exhibition "Henry Moore. The sculptor's drawing"- organized in association with the Henry Moore Foundation- an event on the relationship between Moore's drawings and his sculptures. In parallel, the Museo Novecento has also organized an in-depth study on the particular relationship that binds Henry Moore's work to Tuscany.

At the centre of the Florentine celebrations, there is Henry Moore Relocated, the exhibition at Palazzo Vecchio of the “Guerriero con scudo, Warrior with Shield” (1953-54), an important work by the sculptor who wanted to donate it to Florence as a token of affection and devotion to the Tuscan region.

The sculpture should have been placed in the Loggia of Saturn, in Palazzo Vecchio, but for a several reasons, this was not possible. Moore asked for the return of the work, and it travelled back to England to later become the property of the British Institute of Florence

The exhibition, which will take place in Florence from 18 May 2021 to 9 January 2022, provides for the transfer of the work (now located in the cloisters of Opera di Santa Croce) to a temporary location in Leone X Chamber at Palazzo Vecchio. The handling of the sculpture (estimated value 3 million pounds) is a very delicate operation, for which the intervention of a company specialized in fine arts transport was requested. In addition, a specific condition report was prepared for both transfers, outbound and inbound.

The insurance contribution of Strategica Art Insurance, the technical sponsor of the initiative, was fundamental: "This is a very important intervention, which aims to partially fulfil the wishes of the artist, while conducting the great valorisation carried out by Museo Novecento in a difficult year like 2020 ”, explains Rosa Alba Acquaviva, Director of Strategica’s Fine Art Division.

The exhibition is promoted by the City of Florence and organized by MUS.E, in association with the British Institute of Florence, owner of the work, and the Opera di Santa Croce that preserves it. The project for the exhibition dedicated to “Guerriero con Scudo, Warrior with Shield” is managed by Sergio Risaliti, Artistic Director, Museo Novecento.
